Why do I say things and act completely different? Why is it that I cannot match the things I say with what I do? Why do I feel things that are different to the things I say? Why would you care?

Emotion in Electronic Music?

Posted by meatshield87 Apr. 24, 2009 @ 3:50 AM EDT

Now I like to download music from newgrounds. I think that some of the music found here is very high quality and I enjoy listening to it. Some of it has soul, some of it is catchy and some music just makes me want to get up and dance.

I take my MP3 player to school, it helps me pass the time out of class and on the walk home. My friends all bring their too and it is an odd sight. At lunch we sometimes just sit there and listen to music. We could always do it on our own, we don't need to gather to listen to music, but we just feel the need to have music playing while we talk and eat and what not. We like to share music and trade players and express opinions and stuff.

It seems I come with new music every few days. I almost always show it to my friends, and it's almost always liked. This kind of puzzled me because all of my friends liked all different kinds of music. But still my music is generally liked. Now i used to have all kinds of artists on my MP3. You know, cold play, greenday, U2. But my MP3 now only holds a place for NG music.

But then the other day someone told me that the music had no heart. So I asked why? It was made by someone who was trying to express something, so why would it have no heart? His response is that it was made on a computer, no one was playing and instrument and no one had put heart into it by making "real" music.

I thought about this for a while. I was a bit confused. So I just surfed around on the portal for a bit and looked at an orchestral style piece. It was someone who had composed music about somone they had loved using synths that where made to sound like music from an orchestra. I looked down in the reviews like I normally do and found somone had asked the same question, why not make "real" music. The composer replied, saying that computers where the only thing that allowed him to write music at the time, and that he didn't have enough resources to put together musicians to record or perform any piece that he wrote.

Looking at the description for the song you could tell that the music was written from the heart. I looked around and found so many pieces like it. In some the authors had written stories to go with the music. I find it amazing that people can have such an imagination. I felt like so much more could be gained from listening to the song while envisioning the story that the author had intended for the song to be used with.

I knew then that almost all music was written with heart, no matter what form. Even the catchy tunes convey emotion. You cannot make a song if you have no emotions. Most artists on newgrounds use computers to make their music. But they have to put the music into the program, they decide what comes out and what goes in.

I don't know if anyone can be bothered to read my whole rant, but if you do, leave a comment please.

i read it and your completly right =) all the flashes iv created with emotion, especially the older ones, which where actually animated to songs that portrayed how i felt at the time. Like leaving on a jetplane for example, i moved countries and had to say goodbye to a girl and all my friends, more or less the saem story with wher'd you go.
Not sure but you might enjoy these animations aswell, they where done a long time ago, and although i didn't have much knowlege of drawing or animating they where done from the heart.

The person who said the music had no soul no heart couldn't be more wrong, the computer is an instrument and used by a experienced person can be used to make somthing truely amazing... and even make it using real instrument sounds, and i bet that person wouldn't know the differance =)

good on ya mate =)
good one to you and yours

Thanks for your comment. It's nice to know someone agrees with me. A bit like you I moved and left all of my friends, although when I was young (no girls). The funny thing is I moved to NZ, which I gather is where you moved away from.

Any way thanks for your comment and your opinion!

I agree completely, man. And sadly, I used to think like them too. But making music with a computer program takes just as much creativity and feeling as playing with a real instrument. In some ways it's harder for me to find where to put the notes and what settings to put on what then it is for me to play my acoustic guitar or keyboard. That's about the same as saying drawing with a tablet, or a mouse has no feeling.

But some people you can never change their opinions. They're the real ones without feeling.
